TG-GC/MS: Thermogravimetric - Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry

⮱Although TG-MS allows real-time monitoring, it can be confusing due to overlapping events and higher mass ions obscuring those of lower mass. By adding gas chromatography (GC) to the system, these events can be cleanly separated and very low levels of impurities detected.

⮱Heating a sample on the TGA causes a sample to release volatile materials or generate combustion components as it burns. These gases are then transferred to the GC, where the components can be collected on a trapping media, in a gas sampling loop, or deposited on the head of a column. The sample can then be run by GC to separate the material, and the peaks identified by the MS. Because of its ability to detect very low levels of material in complex mixtures, the TG-GC/MS is a powerful tool for quality control, safety, and product development.

TG-IR: Thermogravimetric - Infrared

The combination of a Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA) with an Infrared Spectrometer (TG-IR) is the most common type of Evolved Gas Analysis (EGA) in use today. By heating a sample on the TGA, a sample will release volatile materials or generate combustion components as it burns. These gases are then transferred to the IR cell, where the components can be identified. Because of its ability to detect functional groups, IR analysis allows greater understanding of the processes seen in the TGA. The PerkinElmer TL8000 transfer line is a state-of-the-art system for TG-IR. Unlike simpler systems that simply move the gas to the TGA, the TL8000 is designed to make sure every component evolved in the TGA is transported to the IR.

TG-IR-GC/MS: Thermogravimetric - Infrared - Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry

Hyphenating TG-IR-GC/MS is a powerful approach for analysis of an unknown mixture to determine its primary components and identify additives or contaminants. This information may be needed, for example, to evaluate a competitor’s product or to determine compliance with regulations. The PerkinElmer TL9000 transfer line is used to allow TG-IR-GC/MS analysis on a sample by moving the off gases to the FT-IR and GC/MS after their evolution in the TGA. It acts as the interface between a TGA or STA, an FT-IR like the Frontier or Spectrum Two FT-IR, and a Mass Spectrometer or GC/MS, such as the Clarus SQ 8.

    Improved HyperDSC Method to Determine Specific Heat Capacity of Nanocomposites and Probe for High-Temperature Devitrification

    Where ?Cp and ?Cp pure are the changes in specific heat at the glass transition temperature, Tg, for the composite, and for the unfilled polymer, respectively. This work suggests an alternative method for determining Cp that takes advantage of fast heating and cooling rates to obtain quantitative Cp in the upper temperature region without having to dwell in that high temperature region to establish an upper isothermal.

    Pharmaceutical Compounds are Analyzed in Half the Time by Simultaneous TGA-DSC

    In the “Early Drug Discovery Phase” of pharmaceutical development when there is a minimum amount of synthesized drug candidate, quick thermal analysis using a small amount of sample is the norm. The sample amount could be less than 3 mg. Because of the rush to identify possible drug candidates, analytical answers must be given within the day. The STA 6000 with its sensitivity of 0.1 µg allows minimum sample material to obtain reproducible results in half the time.

    Biodiesel Concentration Measurements Using Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR)

    Biodiesel fuels are often blended compositions of diesel fuel and esterified soybean oils, rapeseed oils, or other potential vegetable oils as well as fats. The physical and combustion properties of these biofuels have allowed them to achieve similar performance to diesel fuel. However, there are several characteristics that are of concern. These differences, especially the cetane reduction, require that adequate control of the biofuel concentration be implemented.

    Analysis of Bioethanol Impurities with the Spectrum Two FT-IR Spectrometer

    The intensifying global emphasis on developing sustainable fuel supplies has led to increasing use of fuels derived from biological sources. In this note we show that the Spectrum Two™ FT-IR spectrometer (Figure 1) can be used to develop a quantitative method with sufficient sensitivity to meet the required detection limits for methanol, water, C3–C5 alcohols and gasoline denaturant, while requiring less than two minutes of analysis time per sample.

    Cavity-enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy for Trace Gas Detection with Frontier

    Cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy (CEAS) has similarities with the better known cavity ringdown technique (CRDS) which measures the signal decay as a laser pulse emerges through one of the mirrors after successive reflections. By measuring the increase in the rate of decay caused by an absorbing species, CRDS can measure ppb concentrations of small molecules. The ringdown technique has typically been applied to small molecules where the wavelength of a NIR laser source can be tuned across very narrow individual lines of the spectra. In contrast this report describes CEAS using a broadband source applied to larger molecules where the spectra are broader.

    Study Rigid Amorphous Fraction in Polymer Nano-Composites by StepScan and HyperDSC

    Heat capacity measurement has been performed in order to detect a possible second Tg on nanocomposites of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) with silicon oxide nanoparticles of different shape. StepScan™ DSC was used for determination of precise heat capacity and HyperDSC® to prevent degradation and identify devitrification of the RAF at elevated temperatures.

    Many pharmaceutical materials exhibit polymorphism, which means that, depending upon the given processing conditions, the crystalline form may exist in two or more states. The crystalline states or forms exhibit different levels of thermodynamic stabilities and an unstable form can melt at a temperature significantly less than the melting point of the thermodynamically stable form. Depending upon the conditions used to generate the crystalline form(s), the drug may exhibit one or more unstable, polymorphic crystalline states.

    Infrared spectroscopy is particularly suitable for the identification of materials, even when the differences between the materials are subtle variations in complex mixtures. In this note we demonstrate that biodiesel from several common feedstocks can be distinguished on the basis of absorption bands arising from double bonds in the fatty acid chains.
