    Herbal lifestyle products are widely used as alternatives to medicines around the world, with as many as 80% of people using them as a primary source of healthcare in developing countries. These treatments are commonly regarded by scientific papers, and on some occasions the media, as being inferior to orthodox treatment. This is due to the variation between herbal formulations which will not be present in so called ‘single-chemical’ drugs. The reasons for the aforementioned variation involve several factors including storage, environmental conditions, handling and unintentional or intentional contamination (adulteration).

    The efficiency of molecular manipulations involving nucleic acids is heavily dependent on the concentration and purity of the nucleic acid in a sample. The quantification of oligonucleotide is readily accomplished by taking advantage of the absorbance of UV light. Thus, UV light analysis may be used to derive information about the concentration of the sample. This application note describes the quantification of an oligonucleotide using a LAMBDA™ 465 UV/Vis Spectrophotometer.

    Water Analysis Using LAMBDA UV-Visible Spectrophotometers: Chemical Oxygen Demand Determination

    Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is used as an indirect measurement of the sum of oxidizable matter in water and measures the equivalent amount of oxygen required to oxidize organic compounds. Wastewater commonly contains organic compounds, as a result of industrial processes, which can oxidise in the presence of dissolved oxygen in the water. Low levels of dissolved oxygen can be detrimental to aquatic life but high levels may cause corrosion of metal pipes. It is important to use COD as an indicator of water quality. In this application, quantitative analysis of COD was performed using the LAMBDA 265TM UV-Vis spectrophotometer and Merck Spectroquant® COD mercury free cell test.

The most common specimens used in clinical chemistry are blood and urine and this application note shows the common blood tests and measurable items using UV/Vis spectrophotometers as determined by the enzymatic method.

    A Comparison of Two FT-NIR Sampling Techniques for SIMCA Classification of Spectroscopically Similar Pharmaceutical Raw Materials

    NIR Spectroscopy is a useful technique for raw materials identification and verification, but the sophistication of the technique might differ based on the sample. If the materials to be identified are spectroscopically dissimilar, it is often only necessary to use a simple distance measure such as a spectral difference for identification. If the spectra are similar, on the other hand, it may be necessary to use more sophisticated techniques which take into consideration both the intra- and inter-material spectral variation for identification and classification. The SIMCA (Soft Independent Modelling of Class Analogy) algorithm, a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method, provides such an example.

    Water Analysis Using LAMBDA UV/Visible Spectrophotometers: Iron Determination

    Iron is rarely found in its elemental form in nature due to the high tendency of its ions, Fe(II) and Fe(III), to form oxygen and sulphur containing compounds. Concentrations of iron found in surface waters are typically no greater than 1 mg/L, unless contaminated by industrial effluents, whilst much higher concentrations are found in ground waters. The World Health Organization guideline for iron in drinking water is 0.3 mg/L as undesirable bacteria growth in water systems occurs above this concentration. In this application, the quantitative analysis of iron was performed using the LAMBDA 265™ UV/Vis spectrophotometer and CHEMetrics iron cell test kit.
